Preventive Care

How often should my pet have a wellness exam?

Healthy adult dogs and cats should be examined at least once a year, and seniors benefit from a visit every six months. Regular exams at Family Pet Hospital in Chilliwack catch changes early, when they are easiest to manage. Our wellness plans bundle the year's care into one schedule.

Core vaccines are recommended for every dog and cat, and lifestyle vaccines depend on where your pet goes and what they do; in our region, leptospirosis protection is a common recommendation for dogs. Our team builds the right schedule at your pet's first appointment. Call (604) 824-0005 or book online to get started.

Yes. Puppy and kitten first-year wellness plans bundle exams, core vaccines, and parasite prevention into one schedule, so nothing gets missed during the busiest year of your pet's life. Our puppy and kitten guides are a good place to start.

The Fraser Valley's mild, wet climate keeps fleas active essentially year-round, and giardia is common in local rivers, lakes, and puddles, so we recommend year-round prevention rather than a summer-only habit. Heartworm is rare in BC but worth discussing if you travel with your pet. We will tailor a prevention plan to your pet's actual lifestyle.

After Hours and Emergencies

What should I do if my pet has an emergency outside your hours?

Go to your nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital and call them while you are on the way; do not wait for us to open if your pet is in distress. During our open hours, 8:00 AM – 9:00 PM weekdays and 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM weekends, call us first at (604) 824-0005 and come straight in. Ask our team at your next visit and we can recommend an after-hours facility for your area.

Treat these as emergencies: difficulty breathing, collapse or inability to stand, seizures, suspected poisoning, inability to urinate (especially male cats), severe bleeding, major trauma such as being hit by a car, and pale gums. Call us immediately at (604) 824-0005 during our open hours, or go straight to an emergency hospital after hours. When in doubt, call; a two-minute conversation can tell you how urgent things really are.
