Signs that call for same-day attention
Some symptoms are worth a same-day call rather than a wait-and-see approach. Contact us if your dog or cat shows any of the following:
- Difficulty breathing, constant panting at rest, or collapse
- A seizure, or sudden weakness and disorientation
- Suspected contact with something toxic, such as chocolate, grapes, xylitol, rodent bait, or antifreeze
- Straining to urinate or producing little to no urine. In male cats especially, this can become life-threatening quickly
- Repeated vomiting or diarrhea, or a refusal to eat or drink
- Wounds, cuts, or a limp that does not improve
- Facial swelling, hives, or another sign of an allergic reaction
- An eye injury, or sudden squinting, redness, or cloudiness
This is not a complete list. If your pet simply is not acting like themselves and you are worried, it is always reasonable to call and ask.
Why waiting can make things harder
Many pet health problems are easier, and less costly, to treat early. A urinary blockage, a swallowed object, or a wound that becomes infected can move from manageable to serious in a matter of hours. Calling sooner gives your pet the best chance at a smooth recovery, and it gives you clear answers instead of a long, anxious evening of watching and wondering.
