Summer in the Fraser Valley brings long, warm days, lake trips, and plenty of trail time with your dog. It also brings a handful of seasonal risks that send pets to the vet every year. A little planning keeps the season fun for everyone. Here is what our team at Family Pet Hospital wants Chilliwack pet owners to keep in mind.
Heat is harder on pets than it looks
Dogs and cats cool themselves mainly by panting, which is far less efficient than sweating. On a hot afternoon in Sardis or Promontory, that means they can overheat quickly, especially flat-faced breeds, seniors, and pets carrying extra weight.
Never leave a pet in a parked car, even for a few minutes and even with the windows cracked. The temperature inside climbs fast and becomes dangerous long before you are back. On errands, it is safer to leave them home.
Watch for signs of heatstroke: heavy or frantic panting, drooling, bright red gums, weakness, vomiting, or a wobbly, disoriented walk. If you notice these, move your pet somewhere cool, offer small amounts of water, and call us right away at (604) 824-0005.
Check the pavement before you walk
Vedder Road sidewalks and trail parking lots can get hot enough to burn paw pads. Use the five-second test: press the back of your hand to the pavement, and if you cannot hold it there comfortably for five seconds, it is too hot for your dog. Early morning and evening walks are kinder on paws, and they are more pleasant for you too.
Water safety at Cultus Lake and along the Vedder
A day at Cultus Lake or the Vedder River is a Chilliwack summer tradition, and many dogs love it. A few simple habits keep it safe. Not every dog is a strong swimmer, so a well-fitted canine life jacket is worth it around deeper water and currents. Rinse your dog after a swim to remove debris, and bring fresh drinking water so they are not tempted to drink lake or river water.
Keep an eye out for blue-green algae during warm spells. Water that looks like pea soup or carries a scummy, paint-like film can be toxic to dogs. When in doubt, keep your dog out of it, and call us if your pet drinks from water you are unsure about.
Ticks and parasites do not take the summer off
The trails and green spaces around Chilliwack are prime territory for ticks, fleas, and mosquitoes through the warm months. After hikes along the Vedder or up toward Ryder Lake, run your hands over your dog’s coat and check the ears, neck, armpits, and between the toes for ticks.
Year-round parasite prevention is the simplest way to stay ahead of fleas, ticks, and heartworm. If your pet is due, or you are not sure what they are on, our team can recommend a plan that fits their lifestyle. Learn more on our preventive care page or give us a call.
